Recently I read an article in the "Travel Market Report" which I thought was a GREAT article for those with registered service dogs and those guests that may wonder what is the rule and how will it affect them when flying!
Basically the law states from the American Disability Association that as long as the dog is registered they are legally be allowed to companying their handler on board flights/rail/ships/automobile.
MANY of the airline companies here in America will abide by the law however each of the airline companies have their own policies that the handler will have to follow if they want o continue to fly with the company.
Two of the policies that stood out were:
1. The animal MUST be small enough to sit on the handler's lap.
2. The animal MUST be able to sit below the seat at the feet of their handler.
What also stood out from the policies were set by the FAA (Federal Aviation Admin)
1. The animal cannot obstruct the aisle.
2. The animal cannot sit in the Emergency Exit Rows.
My advice would be as it was clearly suggested in the article is to research the policies of the airline prior to booking your flight. There is MANY stipulations as to what is consider a service animal, what is NOT allowed on board flights per carrier and what would need to take place should the animal not cooperate while on board the flight.
What also was kinda of contradicting was that the article stated that documentation for the service dog wasn't needed however if the animal was not cooperating and if traveling internationally documentation would be needed, mu recommendation to ALL guests is just use common sense and bring the documentation to eliminate stress if a situation does develop.
